We are very curious what our gap year travel looks like from the perspective of our children. We tried to give our six-year-old Ms L a camera but it hasn’t really worked out. However, recently the travel impressions are starting to come out in Ms L’s stories as she practices writing. Below are seven stories our daughter has written so far. Where possible, we’ll mention the possible source that we think inspired the story.
A note about the writing. Ms L has attended Montessori kindergartens all her life. In this philosophical approach when a child starts to write practice is the most important thing even if there are mistakes or other “irregularities”. These can be corrected later after the child has gotten the hang of expressing her thoughts on paper.
The temple snake
On the temple was a snake. The snake was hot so he climbed down. The end.
We think this story came about from Ms L’s impressions when we climbed the Tiger Cave Temple cliff in Krabi, Thailand. There were lots of statues on top of the hill, including of deities with snakes on their heads.
Snail and snake
In the garden was a snail. He lived there because there were a lot of leaves. He loved leaves. One morning his friend the snake… they went to play in the garden. They went to bed in the morning. In the evening they woke up. The end.
This is a blend of a bedtime story we read and Ms L’s willingness to challenge having to go to bed each evening. She sees tourists wandering around every evening and would like to do the same.
The lizard and the frog
Once upon a time, there lived a lizard. He was named ‘chinchoo’ [Thai name for lizards]. He was going to the pond by the pond. He saw a frog. The frog said: “Ribbit!” The lizard got scared so it got scared. The end.
The lizard and the big black bin
In the park, there was a big black bin. The lizard climbed in the bin. When the lizard had climbed in the bin. It found a small piece of lemon. Hi tasted the lemon. He curled up its tongue. It went away. The end.
The poisonous frog
In the evening I saw a frog. I wasn’t sure if the frog wasn’t poisonous so I poked the frog. The frog didn’t like to be poked so it hoped away.
A real encounter with a big frog near our hotel in Chiang Mai.
The frog and the crocodile
By the pond was a big green frog. The frog saw crocodile but the frog just thought it was just [a crocodile]. It got scared so it ran away. The end.
In the forest on the branch was a chameleon. The chameleon saw a bird. The chameleon thought it will eat him but the bird wasn’t interested at the chameleon. The end.
